The invention relates to an apparatus (10) for actuating a locking element (11) of a functionally important component, in particular of a steering column or of a gear-shift lever of a motor vehicle, having a gear mechanism (20) which has a drive wheel with a first, stationary rotary shaft (22) and is mechanically operatively connected to the locking element (11), as a result of which the locking element (11) can be moved to a locked position and to an unlocked position when the drive wheel is rotated, wherein the locking element (11) can be moved by rotation of the drive wheel exclusively in one direction. According to the invention, provision is made for the gear mechanism (20) to have a circumferential, curved guide in which at least one control cam (12) engages, and for the control cam (12) to run through the guide when the drive wheel is rotated, as a result of which the locking element (11) is moved in a linear fashion.
