The welding rod comprises a high-alkalinity welding rod coating and a low-alloy steel core wire for the welding rod, wherein the coating is formed by mixing a solid component and a liquid component; the solid component comprises the following composition elements in percentage by weight:44%-48% of CaCO3, 20%-25% of CaF2, 6%-8% of TiO2, 0-1% of Na2CO3, 4%-6% of CaSiO3, 1%-3% of MgO, 4%-10% of TiFe, 1%-3% of SiFe and 4%-10% of metal powder containing Ni and Cr, wherein the metal powder comprises 3%-6% of Ni and 2%-4% of Cr; the liquid component is potassium sodium water glass which accounts for the 20-23% of the mass of a mineral raw material dry powder component, the component elements of the core wire comprise component elements of, by weight, C: 0.09%-0.12%, Si: 0.1%-0.23%, Mn: 1.5%-2.0%, P: less than or equal to 0.02%, S: less than or equal to 0.02%, Cr: 1.0%-1.8%, Ni: 2.6%-3.5%, Mo: 0.3%-0.7%, Cu: less than or equal to 0.020%, Co: less than or equal to 0.020%, and the balance of Fe. The welding rod is good in welding adaptability, high in deposited metal strength, good in toughness and good in low-temperature plasticity, and the welding requirements of SA508Gr.4N steel and improved steel thereof developed at the present stage are met.
