Embodiment Construction

[0027] refer to Figure 1 to Figure 3 A battery 1 for providing electrical power comprises electrochemical cells 20 which are electrically interconnected and stored in an organized manner within a battery housing 2 . The battery pack case 2 includes a pack container portion 3 and a detachable pack cover 4 . The battery cell 20 is a lithium ion pouch battery cell, which includes an electrode assembly 60 ( image 3 and Figure 4 ), the electrode assembly 60 is sealed together with the electrolyte in the battery cell case 21 to form a power generation and storage unit. In some embodiments, several sets of battery cells 20 may be bundled together to form a battery module (not shown), which is then stored within the battery pack housing 2 . However, in the illustrated embodiment, the battery cells 20 are not bundled into modules, and are instead directly electrically connected to the battery pack case terminals 6 , 7 . Inside the pack case 2, the battery cells 20 are electrical...

Abstract

A pouch cell includes a generally rectangular cell housing formed of a metal laminated film, an electrode assembly that is sealed within the cell housing, and a current collector device disposed in the cell housing. The electrode assembly includes positive electrode portions alternating with negative electrode portions, the positive electrode portions and the negative electrode portions being separated by at least one separator and stacked along a stack axis. The current collector device is electrically connected to one of the positive electrode portions and the negative electrode portions andexits the cell housing via an opening formed in the cell housing. The opening is formed in a side wall of the cell housing at a location spaced apart from the sealed joint that closes the cell housing and at a location facing the stack axis.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an electrochemical cell comprising a stacked or rolled arrangement of electrode plates, and a current collector arrangement disposed in the cell, which forms an electrical connection within the cell to the electrode plates and permits electrical connection to the electrode plates via Openings in the battery cell pouch housing pass electrical current out of the battery cells. Background technique [0002] Battery packs power a variety of technologies ranging from portable electronics to renewable energy systems and environmentally friendly vehicles. For example, a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) uses a battery pack and electric motor in combination with an internal combustion engine to improve fuel efficiency. A battery pack is formed from a plurality of battery modules, where each battery module includes a number of electrochemical cells. The battery cells are arranged in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional array, an...
