The invention relates to an optical system (10) comprising:-an optical element (20) comprising a functional glass substrate (1) and an electrochromic stack (2) formed on the substrate (1), the electrochromic stack (2) comprises a first transparent conductive layer, a working electrode disposed over the first transparent conductive layer, a counter electrode disposed over the working electrode, a second transparent conductive layer disposed over the counter electrode, lithium ions introduced within the electrochromic stack, and a separate ion conductor layer preferably interposed between the electrode and the counter electrode; -a protective layer (3) disposed on the electrochromic stack (2), the protective layer (3) comprising an inorganic lubricating compound.
