An intraluminal device is provided with a porous structure. The porous structure may be loaded with a bioactive substance to treat surrounding tissues after the intraluminal device has been implanted. The porous structure may be made by depositing a metal film on a foam structure using chemical vapor deposition. Porous structures may also be made by sintering or applying a ceramic layer to the intraluminal device. An intraluminal device is also provided with a ceramic material applied to generally straight portions of the device structure but not to portions adapted to bend. One advantage is that the ceramic material is less likely to fracture since it is applied to regions that experience less strain.

The instant invention relates generally to catheters and to introducer catheters used to help deliver catheters or other medical devices to locations within the human body. In particular, the instant invention relates to large diameter catheters and introducer catheters having a torque transfer layer that includes at least two flat wires braided into a wire mesh. The flat wires have a width of at least about 0.007 inches and a depth of at least about 0.003 inches. The lumen diameter of the catheter is at least about 6 French. The torque transfer layer provides increased strength, flexibility, and kink resistance.

A method for transmitting personal health information from a databank to a health facility. An individual's health information is stored in a database, and the information is sent to authorized users as needed. The information is stored in the database by coding an individual's private file with a unique identifying number or alpha-numeric sequence. The individual is provided with an electronically readable identifier (ERI) that corresponds to the unique identifying number or alpha-numeric sequence. The ERI can be scanned by medical personnel with the appropriate scanner. The scanner is authenticated by the database, and the information corresponding to that individual is sent back to the scanner for use by the emergency medical personnel. The health information can also be sent to a hospital. The entire process requires authentication of the medical personnel and validation of the ERI for security purposes.

Systems for detecting when catheter electrodes enter into and exit from an introducer are disclosed. In one form, a system detects a relative position of a catheter (comprising a marker band and an electrode) and an introducer (comprising a proximity sensor adapted to sense the marker band), while the catheter and introducer are in a human body. The system may comprise an electronic control unit to analyze signals from the catheter and/or the introducer, to determine whether the catheter electrode is within the introducer; and to disregard data collected from the electrode when that electrode is in the introducer. The sensor may be on the catheter and the sensed element may be on the introducer. The sensed element may comprise one or several marker bands. A marker band may be applied during the manufacture of a medical device or during its use and is any element capable of electromagnetic detection.

A method and apparatus for verifying a determined cardiac event in a medical device based on detected variation in hemodynamic status that includes a plurality of sensors sensing cardiac signals, and a physiologic sensor sensing physiologic signals to generate a plurality of variation index samples corresponding to the sensed signals. A microprocessor detects a cardiac event in response to the sensed cardiac signals, computes a variation index trend associated with a predetermined number of variation index samples of the plurality of variation index samples, determines a rate of change of the computed variation index trend, and confirms the determined cardiac event in response to the computed variation index trend and in response to the determined rate of change.

The apparatus enables the clinician to select a pair of electrodes that is contained on a lead of the implanted device. Corresponding to each iteration of the process, the processor sends a command to the implanted device in order to increment the amplitude of the stimulation pulse between the selected electrodes. Each iteration of the process corresponds to the apparatus incrementing the current value by a predetermined incremental value that can be selected by the clinician. When the current value of the amplitude equals the target value, the process is halted. Additionally, the clinician can halt process during the execution of the process by instructing the apparatus.

A magnetically guidable medical device for use within the large intestine of a human body. A magnetically guidable guide wire is introduced into the rectum of a body of a patient and maneuvered through the colon under the influence of a controlled magnetic field to a desired location within the body of the patient. An external magnetic field applying means applies an external magnetic field effective to guide the magnetically guidable member within the body of the patient. A colonoscope is advanced over the guide wire so that the advancement and placement of the colonoscope is aided by the magnetically guided guide wire. Either or both the magnetically guidable guide wire and the colonoscope can be viewed using a fluoroscope to assist in positioning it within the body of the patient.

An improved delivery system for an implantable medical device includes a retention sheath for an implantable medical device. The retention sheath includes a central lumen extending from a proximal end to a distal end of the retention sheath, and a tapered portion disposed at a distal end of the retention sheath. The tapered portion of the retention sheath includes a first layer made of a low-friction material. The first layer may be movable from a compressed, folded configuration in an initial position, to a substantially uncompressed and unfolded configuration in a deployment position. The retention sheath also includes a second layer made of an expandable material. The second layer is disposed radially outward of and in contact with the first layer, and the second layer is configured to expand in a substantially radially outward direction when the first layer moves from the initial position to the deployment position.
