Methods for combating malicious software

ActiveUS20090077664A1Memory loss protectionError detection/correctionCausal treeData segment
A method for combating malware monitors all attempts by any software executing on a computer to write data to the computer's digital storage medium and records details of the attempts in a system database having a causal tree structure. The method also intercepts unauthorized attempts by executing objects to modify the memory allocated to other executing objects or to modify a selected set of protected objects stored on the digital storage medium, and may also intercept write attempts by executing objects that have a buffer overflow or that are executing in a data segment of memory. The method may include a procedure for switching the computer into a quasi-safe mode that disables all non-essential processes. Preferably, the database is automatically organized into software packages classified by malware threat level. Entire or packages or portions thereof may be easily selected and neutralized by a local or remote user.

Reconfigurable measurement system utilizing a programmable hardware element and fixed hardware resources

InactiveUS20030163298A1Accurate and efficient matchingSimple configurationError detection/correctionDigital computer detailsProgrammable hardwareComputer hardware
A system and method for configuring a device to perform a function, where the device includes a programmable hardware element and one or more fixed hardware resources. A program is stored which represents the function. A hardware configuration program is generated based on the program, specifying a configuration for the programmable hardware element that implements the function, and usage of the fixed hardware resources by the programmable hardware element in performing the function. A deployment program deploys the hardware configuration program onto the programmable hardware element, where, after deployment, the device is operable to perform the function, where the programmable hardware element directly performs a first portion of the function, and the programmable hardware element invokes the fixed hardware resources to perform a second portion of the function. An optional measurement module couples to the device and performs signal conditioning and / or conversion logic on an acquired signal for the device.

Nonvolatile memory with adaptive operation

InactiveUS20080092015A1Error detection/correctionStatic storageSelf adaptiveOperating system
In a nonvolatile memory system a Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) decoder corrects errors in data that is read from a memory and a statistical unit connected to the SISO decoder collects data regarding corrections. The statistical unit generates at least one output based on the collected data and at least one operating parameter of the memory is modified in response to the output.

System and method for migrating stateless virtual functions from one virtual plane to another

A system and method for migration of stateless virtual functions from one virtual plane to another are provided. When a migration of a source virtual function to a destination virtual function in another virtual plane is to be performed, a source single root PCI manager (SR-PCIM) is first interrupted by a multiple root PCI manager (MR-PCIM). Configuration information that defines the source virtual function is then redefined on the destination virtual function for this stateless migration. A function level reset may then be performed on the source virtual function. The destination SR-PCIM may be interrupted by the MR-PCIM with an interrupt for the destination virtual function. A function level reset may then be performed on the destination virtual function. The destination virtual function state may then be changed to an “active” state such that the migrated virtual function begins processing transactions.

Monitoring and controlling the operation of devices in a distributed network of broadcast devices

ActiveUS20110206136A1Picture reproducers using cathode ray tubesPicture reproducers with optical-mechanical scanningTest engineerBroadcasting
The invention relates to a system and method for monitoring and controlling the operation of devices in a distributed network of broadcast devices, such as Set Top Boxes (STBs). Such devices typically require periodic updates as new versions of operating software is developed. However, it is not possible to guarantee that all devices that have received an updated software version are able to operate correctly. The system initiates a test for a STB and monitors in real time the state of the STB as the software download occurs. The state of the STB is reported to a system controller and the results are output to a test engineer. Other devices in the broadcast network can be controlled by the controller and various troubleshooting or operational tests performed.

A storage controller of the present invention reduces maintenance work by the user by irreplaceably mounting the respective component parts inside an enclosure. A plurality of disk drives, which comprise a spare drive, and repair slots are arranged in close proximity in a matrix on the front side inside the enclosure. A backboard is disposed rearward of the respective disk drives. A plurality of control boards are arranged rearward of the backboard by being stacked one atop the other. A plurality of disk drives and a plurality of batteries respectively stacked one atop the other are arranged on the one side of the respective control boards. A plurality of power devices stacked one atop the other are arranged on the other side of the respective control boards. A plurality of cooling fans are arranged in the center part of the enclosure. The respective parts are affixed to the enclosure so as to be irreplaceable under normal circumstances.

Tracking discrete elements of distributed transactions

InactiveUS20070294224A1Error detection/correctionInterprogram communicationAsynchronous communicationDistributed computing
Methods and systems for grouping two or more communications on a computer network into a transaction. One embodiment includes a method of tracking an asynchronous communication between two applications. The method includes receiving a first and third event record associated with a first and third application, wherein the first and third event records indicate the occurrence of an interaction between the first and third applications. The method may further include receiving a second event record from a second application. The second event record may be used by a managing server to group the first and third interactions as belonging to a common transaction.
